Event description

Description

Join neighbors, friends and families as we call for a shift in our energy system while enjoying arts, music, and stories.

This event is kid friendly and will feature Street Creature Puppets, the Fairie Kin stilt-walkers,a kids craft table and more. We will have a short program that includes an interactive story-telling workshop. Music by Mad Mike of the Natural Born Leaders will follow.

Some appetizers will be provided. Food and beverages are also available for purchase at the venue.

Teaming up with local partners Community Roots, the Asheville Sunrise Movement, Indivisible WNC, and Dogwood Alliance, Energy Justice North Carolina is bringing a powerful message to Asheville: It’s Time to End the Duke Monopoly.

We are calling for a just and democratic energy system that allows local communities to have a say in how and where their electricity is produced. The current monopoly system stifles clean energy options that these local organizations are working towards.

Community Roots will outline the Community Bill of Rights for Asheville, a ballot initiative to establish our ability to self-govern our power supply, prohibit the building of new fossil fuel infrastructure and require the City to create and implement a Transition Plan to reach a 100% renewable energy goal by 2030.

The Sunrise Movement, a youth led group advocating for a Green New Deal, will lead an exercise to help us explore our personal climate story and vision for the future.

Advocates for a rapid transition to 100% clean energy will talk about how Duke’s monopoly control of our electricity system stymies local plans to make that transition.
