Event Details

Ashburn Youth Symphonic Orchestras (AYSO), an educational and performance program, is open to young musicians ages of 5 and 19. Its mission is to combine and strengthen the abilities of orchestra and band students and offer them an opportunity to create beautiful music in a new setting: a symphony orchestra!

The 2016-2017 season, consists of 3 concert sessions. Students may register per concert session and are encouraged to participate in all three. Current students (all instruments) and new string players may proceed straight to registration and audition only for placement. New woodwind, brass and percussion students must have an approved audition in order to register. New student auditions will be held at the beginning of each concert session, depending on positions available in each orchestra. Tuition per concert session is $125, a special discount is available ($300 total) when registering to all 3 concert sessions in the Fall. Tuition is non-refundable after the first week of the session, and cannot be prorated for late registration. A limited number of need-based scholarships is available.  If recommended by the conductor or mentors, students may re-audition after a concert session to be considered for a new level orchestra.

AYSO has openings for brass, woodwinds, string and percussion players.  Participating students must provide their own instruments (with the exception of double bass and percussion).

Placement auditions requirement: 2-3 minute prepared solo demonstrating the student's level of proficiency in the instrument (it may be an orchestra or band excerpt) and sight-reading.

Through our mentorship program, the most advanced and experienced instrumentalists are also available to mentor beginner and intermediate students. Information about mentors will be provided to all registered musicians. High school juniors and seniors may apply to be mentors. If qualified, a full scholarship to the program will be offered. Mentors MUST be available to assist in rehearsals of all symphonies (not necessarily the Debut String Orchestra).

The YMPPA programs are modeled after the Venezuelan System of Youth Orchestras, which has proved that music can be an effective way to create change for the better in society. Special thanks to LCPS Music Supervisor, Mr. Michael Pierson, Mrs. Elaine Stanford; and to Ms. Carrie Albers and all LCPS orchestra and band teachers for their support of the AYSO.

About the Musical Director: Gabriela Bohnett is a product of the Venezuelan National Music System. Through high school in her native Barquisimeto she performed with the Lara State Youth Orchestra, and then with the Chacao Symphony Orchestra during her college years in Caracas. After completing her musical studies in Conservatorios de Musica “Vicente Emilio Sojo” and “Jacinto Lara”, in Venezuela, Ms. Bohnett moved to the United States where she studied Education and Curriculum, and completed studies in early childhood music, conducting, violin performance and violin pedagogy in Catholic University of America, George Mason University and Juilliard School of Music. She is currently pursuing an Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Licentiate in Symphony Orchestra Conducting. She performed with the Washington Symphony Orchestra and is a member of the Suzuki Association of the Greater Washington Area (SAGWA) and of the Suzuki Association of the Americas. In December 2003, Bohnett founded the YMPPA, dedicated to extend the wonders of classical music to the broader community. She lives in Ashburn with her husband and her three children, and maintains a private strings studio, while presiding over the YMPPA. Bohnett serves as a consultant for several LCPS string teachers and has been a guest conductor for LCPS ensembles.
