About this event

We will have three amazing speakers and their bios are below:

Mr. Carlos Herranz Calvo, PE PMP: Tunnel Design Manager with 15+ years' experience in large transportation projects with tunneling emphasis. Experienced in numerical modeling with structural and geotechnical software. Professional Engineer licensed in California and certified Project Manager Professional.

Professor Edward Coding: Edward Cording is Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, where he taught and conducted research in rock mechanics and soil-structure interaction for tunnel, excavation, and slope stability projects. His experience has been on projects ranging from large caverns in stress-fracturing tuff in Nevada, deep rock tunnels in squeezing shales in the Uinta Mountains, shallow subway station caverns in metamorphic rock along the East coast, shield tunnels in alluvial soils in Washington, D.C. and in the soft Chicago clay. These investigations led to analyses and development of criteria for assessing ground movements due to excavation and tunneling and for relating ground movements to building distortion and damage. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow in the Geological Society of America and the American Rock Mechanics Association. Honors include the Moles Award in 2003, and Beaver’s Engineering Award in 2013, for Outstanding Achievement in Construction; the ASCE Geo Institute Harry Schnabel, Jr Award for Career Excellence in Earth Retaining Structures in 2007; the Outstanding Educator Award, and Underground Construction Association of SME in 2012. He presented the 2018 Muir Wood Lecture at World Tunnel Congress in Dubai and the 2020 Terzaghi Lecture at ASCE Geo-Congress in Minneapolis.

Professor Tom O'Rourke: Tom O’Rourke is the Thomas R. Briggs Professor of Engineering Emeritus in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University. He is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering, Distinguished Member of ASCE, International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Member of the Mexican Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He received a number of distinctions for his research and teaching, including the Stephen D. Bechtel Pipeline Engineering and Ralph B. Peck Awards from ASCE. He gave the 2009 Rankine and 2016 Terzaghi Lectures. He served as President of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) and as the chair or member of many professional society committees. He received the George W. Housner Medal from EERI in 2016. He authored or co-authored over 400 technical publications. His research interests cover geotechnical engineering, earthquake engineering, underground construction technologies, engineering for large, geographically distributed systems, and geographic information technologies and database management.
