Description:

With the recent passage of new federal regulations, small, unmanned aerial systems (aka drones) are rapidly changing how civil engineering projects are conducted. An overview of the applicable federal, state and local requirements, especially for drone pilots, will be provided during this presentation. Insurance provisions for drone owners will also be briefly discussed. Drones can be used for a range of cost-effective engineering applications such as detailed inspections, precision surveying, construction monitoring, and promotional purposes. Drones provide real-time access to reliable, accurate data. They can also reduce labor and data processing costs and enabling more efficient resource allocations. Drones can be especially useful in situations where worker safety could be an issue (e.g., difficult terrain, wind turbine inspections). Examples of the range of potential engineering applications and the cost-advantage of using drones will be included in this presentation.
