Course Day 1: AS 102 - Aerospike Administration and Operations

Aerospike is an enterprise-class, NoSQL database solution for real-time operational applications that delivers predictable performance at scale, superior uptime, and high availability at the lowest TCO compared to first-generation NoSQL and relational databases.

Intended for IT operations personnel (e.g. DevOps, Database Administrators), this full-day, instructor-led, hands-on course focuses on the proper installation and configuration of an Aerospike cluster. Students will use their own laptop and log into a provided AWS instance to install the database, run commands from the command line, and monitor the database using the Aerospike Management Console (AMC).   

Prerequisites:

  • Basic Linux admin experience

  • Wifi enabled laptop

  • Ability to ssh into a server instance on AWS

  • PDF viewer

  • Aerospike Architecture:

    • High level architecture.

    • Data hierarchy.

    • Data partitioning

  • Installation

    • Installation of Aerospike server & tools

    • Installation of Aerospike Management Console

    • How to start/stop Aerospike server & AMC server

  • AQL:  Aerospike Query Language - a command line tool for managing the database with SQL–like commands.  

  • Planning and Testing

    • Basic capacity planning

    • Using the Aerospike Java Benchmark tool.

    • Load test data, run benchmark tests.

  • Storage

    • How Aerospike Reads/Writes/Updates Data.

    • Defragmentation.

    • Data Hygiene.

    • Configuring Storage.

Course Day 2: AS 101 - Aerospike for Developers

Aerospike is an enterprise-class, NoSQL database solution for real-time operational applications that delivers predictable performance at scale, superior uptime, and high availability at the lowest TCO compared to first-generation NoSQL and relational databases.

Aerospike for Developers is a full-day, instructor-led course in which developers will learn the Aerospike-related concepts necessary to develop applications, as well as the APIs available for them to use in these apps. Students will use their own laptop to work on hands-on lab exercises and code examples in C#, Java, and Python.

Students should be familiar with one of the course programming languages, supply their own laptops and have the relevant development environment setup for one of the following languages:

  • Java - JDK and Maven (Eclipse is optional)

  • C# - Visual Studio

  • Python

  • Architecture and Data Model

    • High level architecture.

    • Data Hierarchy

    • Types: Namespaces, Sets, Records, Bins and Bin types, Language mapping.

  • Key-value operations

    • Connect and Disconnect from an Aerospike cluster

    • Perform Write operations

    • Perform Read operations

    • Apply advanced key-value techniques

    • Correctly handle errors

  • User Defined Functions for Records

    • Know the situation when a UDF is appropriate

    • Develop record User Defined Functions (UDFs) in Lua

    • Register a UDF with the cluster

    • Invoke a record UDF

    • Correctly handle errors

  • Queries

    • Define and manage secondary indexes

    • Execute a query on a secondary index

    • Process the results of a query

    • Correctly handle errors

  • Aggregations

    • Use a Filter operation
