The Association of Research in the Voluntary and Community Sector (ARVAC) would like to invite you to our AGM and annual conference.
Angus McCabe, senior research fellow at the Third Sector Research Sector at the University of Birmingham will be this year’s keynote presenting on, ‘ Plus ca change: Communities Post Brexit.’
Predicting the future of communities and community groups is notoriously difficult. The demise of voluntary action, after all, has already been announced on several occasions. News of its death has, however, been somewhat exaggerated.
So what will be the impact of Brexit on communities and community groups? Some predictions have already emerged around the impact of leaving the EU on formal voluntary organisations. Little attention has been paid to more informal, below the radar, forms of organising. Drawing on the learning from the Third Sector Research Centre at the University of Birmingham, this session will ask whether Brexit will fundamentally change the nature and capacity of community groups to respond to local needs – or will it be a case of ‘plus ca change’?
Angus McCabe is a Senior Research Fellow at the Third Sector Research Centre at the University of Birmingham. His work focuses on the changing role of informal community groups. Angus has a background in community development in both rural and urban settings in the UK and is the editor of the forthcoming book Community Groups in Context: Understanding local activities and actions (Policy Press)
