Event description
Do a walking tour of the Midtown neighborhood for ArtWalk Kingston as we visit galleries and venues and explore architecture and history

About this Event

ArtWalk Kingston is the largest open studio event in the Hudson Valley – a two-day celebration of the arts and community.

On Sunday, Sept. 22, for a Mindful Walker tour, we'll stroll through the Midtown neighborhood, stopping in a number of galleries, studios, and artistic venues and taking in some of the neighborhood's architecture and history as we go.

Midtown was the industrial and civic heart of Kingston in the later decades of the 19th cenury and the early 20th century. After the neighborhood endured a long period of neglect in the mid-20th century and lost some of its architectural jewels, artists, activists, local merchants and entrepreneurs, residents, volunteers, and architects sparked a renewal of Midtown. The Kingston Midtown Arts District (MAD) was launched in 2016. Various entities have repurposed former industrial buildings into apartments and lofts , studios, galleries, and community spaces. Where once young woman ironed shirts in a factory, artists are painting or learning new techniques in silversmithing.

During the tour, we'll look at paintings, photography, fiber art, and other artwork mediums; meet and talk with artists; and discover incredible architecture and building details. We'll take in not just beautiful Victorian-era buildings, but the quirky and cool character of this walkable, historic place.

Susan DeMark, creator of Mindful Walker tours, will lead the ArtWalk. The walks are experiences that invite your observations . They are a mini-retreat as much as a walking tour.
