Business for the Arts Presents: artsScene Calgary Launch Party

artsScene Calgary (artsscenecalgary.com) is a non-profit initiative that brings together young business and creative professionals (ages 18-40) through the arts, culture and creative industries. We invite you to our inaugural social event on the evening of June 25, where we'll celebrate the best visual and aural arts Calgary has to offer.

We'll kick off the night at Art Central, a visual art complex that serves as the axis for creativity in the arts in our city and the Palomino Club, a down-and-slightly-dirty recreation of a classic dive bar and a hub for local live music.

In conjunction with the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts the evening will begin with an exhibit by the 2009 inductees into Canada’s premier arts body. You'll get a chance to meet some of Canada’s most prolific and talented artists including:

  • Christian Eckart – painting
  • Joe Fafard – sculpture
  • Justin Wonnacott  – photography
  • Vikky Alexander – photography; mixed media

At 8:30 p.m. we'll move the launch across the street to The Palomino Club, where in partnership with the Sled Island Music Festival and CBC Radio 3, several emerging Canadian bands will serve up some energetic music ranging from rock to progressive to electro. Dancing is encouraged.

Featured Artists

Axis of Conversation, Music Artist
Whenever Calgary's Axis of Conversation comes up in, er conversation, the first word that comes to mind is "dreamy." Not only are front man Chris dela Torre and his classically trained band mates total dreamboats, but their music would also make the perfect soundtrack for soft-focus sleepy-time adventures. With their mix of art-rock, orchestral pop and glitch-hop, someone should seriously ring up Michel Gondry so he can use them in his next movie.

Analog Bell Service, Music Artist
This indie rock group hails from the streets of Vancouver's China Town. With a sound similar to indie gods Modest Mouse, Analog Bell Service brings an upbeat dancey sound with catchy melodies and haunting harmonies guaranteed to keep you captivated. Members of Analog Bell Service have played the Sasquatch Music Festival, SXSW and toured Europe with such bands as the Choir Practice and The Gay Straights.

Brasstronaut, Music Artist
Brasstronaut makes full and beautiful music that is best suited for a late night smoke filled basement venue. This is music you can escape to amongst the chaos of life or at least the brash chords of the band before.http://www.myspace.com/brasstronaut
The Pack A.D., Music Artist
One could guess that the gals in The Pack A.D. may be a little tired of being "The Female Black Keys," but when the moniker even somewhat fits, it's hard to let go.Speaking of letting go, it's a better idea not to, when the ferocious bluesy-garage rock train of The Pack A.D. take the stage. Hold on for dear life and you may make it through the night.http://www.myspace.com/thepackad
