Event description

Description

The Noguchi Museum presents a one-night-only concert with two world–renowned musicians, Japanese drummer Hideo Yamaki and bassist Bill Laswell. They will be joined by a very special musical guest for a one-hour improvised set inspired by Isamu Noguchi’s sculptures. Noguchi was an engaged appreciator of the world’s music, and his stone sculpture installation provides an intimate setting for this collaboration.

Doors at 7 pm; begins promptly at 7:30 pm
Beer generously provided by Big aLICe Brewing Co.

The Museum gratefully acknowledges Arkitektura for its support of this performance.

Bill Laswell is a legendary, iconoclast bassist and producer who has collaborated with a variety of musicians, including David Byrne, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Herbie Hancock, Laurie Anderson, Bernie Worrell, Afrika Bambaataa, Mick Jagger, Ginger Baker, Julian Schnabel, Fela Kuti, Public Image Ltd., Iggy Pop, Bootsy Collins, and many others. His working relationship with Hideo Yamaki began in the 1980s and has taken many diverse and unprecedented configurations. Together, they have established a dialogue between bass and drums that explodes with fluid, spontaneous blasts of feeling, an ever expanding, dynamic matrix.

Hideo Yamaki is Japan's most renowned, respected, and in-demand drummer. He is a veteran of countless recording and live projects with Japan’s most celebrated pop and rock artists. He has also collaborated with icons such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, John Zorn, Arto Lindsay, Toshinori Kondo, DJ Krush, Akira Sakata, and many others.

As a licensed New York State farm brewery, Big aLICe Brewing partners with state hop farmers and maltsters to craft innovative, locally sourced beer. Named in honor of the nearby red-and-white striped Ravenswood generator stacks, their taproom is located in Long Island City, Queens, just blocks from The Noguchi Museum.
