Event description
Create a painting inspired by the master of movement, Aboriginal artist Dorothy Napangardi!

About this event

"Dorothy Napangardi’s success as an artist lies in her ability to evoke a strong sense of movement on her canvases, an effect she achieves because of her remarkable spatial sense and compositional ability.” -- Christine Nicholls, curator

Dorothy Napangardi (1950-2013) was a groundbreaking Australian artist at the forefront of the contemporary Australian Aboriginal art movement. Her presence in the contemporary art world brought increased attention Aboriginal artists that began in the 1970’s, and led many other indigenous female artists to follow in her footsteps in the 1990’s and after.

Dorothy’s art concentrates on movement to capture the viewer. Her work is a confluence of modernized techniques and socio-religious traditions of her ancestral past in what is called ‘Dreaming’. It is the English translation of the Warlpiri word ‘Jukurrpa’, which describes the journeys of ancestral spirits and the sacred places that they in-habit, and the idea of inseparability of the self from the environment. These ‘Jukurrpa’ notions are represented in Napangardi’s artwork by converging lines suggesting spiritual meaning and expressive depth.

Join CMATO on Saturday, May 22 at 2:00 PM PT for our Artist Workshop series as we create abstract stipple paintings influenced by the master of movement, Dorothy Napangardi. Previous painting experience is recommended but not required. This session will be held via Zoom.
