WHERE we are:

Take King Street Metro and trolley down to the waterfront: 105 North Union Street, Alexandria VA.
WHO are our visitors?
Over a half million visitors per year come from around the world and from every state. Local visitors are 40% of our traffic. Our recent audience study found that our visitors are well educated, diverse, culturally engaged and highly loyal. 60% of our visitors have purchased art from one of our studios or galleries.
WHY do they visit us?
Top comment on Yelp: “Pretty cool place that houses some fantastic artists”.
WHO can apply for studio space?
We invite visual artists over age 18 to apply: we welcome all ethnicities, genders, orientations, nationalities, and religions.
WHAT TYPE of art is accepted?
Visual art, of high quality as judged by our panel of independent experts. There are some caveats: we can’t handle extremely hazardous materials or processes.
HOW MUCH does it cost to have a studio?
Cost ranges from less than $100/month in some shared spaces to over $1,000/month. Short-term commitments are available to juried Associates and for summer residencies.
WHAT TIME commitment is required?
Variable. Most residencies require at least 4 days per week.
CAN I make a living there?
It is entirely possible! But it is not guaranteed. It’s ultimately up to you- how prolific you are, how you market your work, how many other venues you show in; these and other factors come into play. Our artists are independent business professionals. They pay rent and dues; we do not collect sales commissions. Please note that the studios are not a retail venue to show other people’s work or merchandise- only your own creations.
TELL me about the jury?
We select well-qualified jurors with diverse viewpoints and backgrounds: academics, gallery owners, curators, and artists representing a broad variety of media expertise within the panel. We do not veto, weigh-in or overrule their selections.
We get about 60 applicants to our annual membership jury. Historically, the jurors have selected between 6 and 20 artists each year. We do not give the jury panel any minimum or maximum goal or quotas.
IF ACCEPTED, will I get a studio?
We replace about 1/3 of our artists in a five-year period, through natural attrition. We do not guarantee placement, but we do have a good track record. Most Associates who make themselves available get absorbed into the group studios.
