Event description
Join Commuter Biennial for a special artist talk with Virginia Overton at the Deering Estate.

About this Event

Join Commuter Biennial in conversation with artist Virginia Overton as she discusses her sculptural installation Late Bloomer on site on The People's Dock at the Deering Estate. With this work, Overton repurposes the bed of her Dodge Ram 150 pickup truck and fashions it into a habitat for native aquatic plants. This piece will evolve throughout the course of its installation as the plants continue to grow. This discussion will explore the conception and construction of this work, as well as Overton's artistic career.

12:00 PM -2:00 PM

Deering Estate: 16701 SW 72nd Ave.

Free and open to the public. RSVP required.

Virginia Overton (b. 1971, lives in Brooklyn, NY) is known for her site-specific and sculpture works that often incorporate found or readymade objects. Virginia Overton's work comprises installation, sculpture and photography, often beginning intuitively as a direct response to her physical presence in a particular space. Through a process of trial and error, she creates sculpture that is performative, sometimes obstructing, bisecting, dividing or joining the architecture of a space with works that are dramatic and minimal in feel.

Commuter Biennial is a Knight funded public art exhibition taking place throughout Miami-Dade County from July through October 2019. This exhibition aims to highlight commuter experiences of the Miami metro area by activating unconventional and underutilized locations, bringing attention to marginal, yet recognizable places in the suburban landscape. In activating these areas, the biennial seeks to redefine the places we consider home, underscoring the character and quality of neighborhoods. The Biennial seeks to democratize access to art through a series of artistic commissions across a wide range of styles and mediums that intersect high and low concepts and modalities.

Commuter Biennial is made possible with the generous support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation through a Knight Arts Challenge grant, with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and Cultural Affairs Council, and the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. Commuter Biennial is sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. The exhibition is organized by the Gables Hispanic Cultural Foundation with the support of the Miami Foundation.
