Presented by FotoFest International

Artist Pushpamala N. has been referred to as "the most entertaining artist-iconoclast of contemporary Indian art". Her work has been described as performance photography. The artist discusses her art, and her career with 2018 Biennial Co-Curator Steven Evans on the final day of the FotoFest 2018 Biennial.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
After having lived for periods of time in different cities, Pushpamala N. now resides and works as an independent artist in Bangalore, India. She received her B.A. (1982) and M.A. (1985) in sculpture at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara, India. She exhibits widely in India and internationally, and speaks often at seminars and conferences. She is the recipient of the National Film Award awarded by the Directorate of Film Festivals, India (1984); gold medal for sculpture, VI Triennale- India, New Delhi (1986); Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, Bangalore (1986); Jakanachari Award from the Karnataka State, India (2015); and honors such as the Rockefeller Foundation artist residency at Bellagio Study Centre, Italy (2005); Centre Georges Pompidou residency, Paris (2009); French Embassy-Service for Cooperation and Culture residency, Paris (2005); India Foundation for the Arts Fellow (1999 and 2016); and Charles Wallace India Trust scholar, London (1992).

Pushpamala’s work is in the collection of the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Seattle Art Museum, Washington; Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis; Saatchi and Saatchi, London; Manchester City Art Galleries, U.K.; Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Bradford, U.K.; Queensland Art Gallery, South Brisbane, Australia; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; and in India, at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi.
