Description

Please join us for an artist demo & talk by our exhibiting artist Lori Sokoluk on Saturday, September 30th at the Deer Lake Gallery.

The successful ‘Port Town’ series by Lori Sokoluk, evokes the flux and mystery that shroud the territorial edge where city meets waterway. Humans draw lines based on industry, wealth, national security, prestige, and access to nature. Time is palpable in the rise and fall of the tide, shifting mists, and patina on surfaces. Ports are places of mystery, beginnings and endings. In these pieces, soft elements - organic lines, curving shapes, and drips of rain – are juxtaposed with mechanical, angular shapes and sharp-edged cutouts or photo transfers. Veils of paint obscure definition, mimicking the action of clouds and fog on our perception of the port. Her imagery has the feel of architectural drawings imploding onto watery landscapes done in soft grays, violets, blues and pale yellows.

Sokoluk has studied privately and at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. Her work is included in private and institutional collections in Canada, the United States, Japan, Pakistan, India, and the United Kingdom. Her studio, REDSOKIL ARTS, is based in Vancouver, Canada.

Find out how Lori creates these textured works of art. She will show you how she transfers images from her photographs, and the various drawing tools she uses in these paintings.
