The Art Therapy Institute Presents: The 2016- 2017 Continuing Education Series

This workshop series is geared towards counselors, social workers, expressive arts therapists, graduate students, and other allied professionals, but ALL are welcome! No art or art therapy experience is necessary.

Two clock hours of continuing education will be offered.

$45/workshop ($30/students) or $375/entire series

CEs are available; ATI is an NBCC-approved provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.

Art Therapy and ADHD, October 27th 6:30-8:30pm

Stumped why students are off-task and doodling in class? This lecture is intended to introduce attendees about the correlation between doodling and memory recall and talk about how doodling can be used in an academic and therapeutic settings. Also the presenter will explain her narrative of growing up with a profound learning disability and becoming an art therapist.

Art as Form of Communication with Alzheimer's Patient, November 3rd, 6:30-8:30pm

Nancy Ferguson LMFT

"Over a period of 2 years, we used drawing to free my husband, Harold, from his AD for a few hours each day." Nancy, his wife and presenter, and Miho Nakamura, CNA, planned out drawing activities for him--a "job" that improved his focus and language skills. This presentation will demonstrate how art improved the quality of Harold's life. He was able to use language to the end of his life and created his last picture about a month before he died May 22, 2016. Harold had two art shows, and loved art but did not produce any until they started this activity with him.

Creative Arts Therapy with Adults Living with Chronic Mental Illness: November 17th 6:30-8:30pm

This workshop will begin with a short video presentation to introduce the range of creative arts therapy modalities followed by a discussion of challenges in conducting groups with clients from a wide variety of cultural and social backgrounds as well as the whole range of psychiatric diagnoses. An examination of artwork related to specific diagnoses will conclude this workshop.

Expressive Arts Therapy Roundtable, December 1st, 6:30-8:30pm

A panel of expressive arts therapists including art, music, dance, and drama therapists will speak about their work in the community and answer questions about the field. Panelists will talk about the populations they serve, the kind of directives they often employ in their clinical work, and offer brief experientials for workshop attendees.

Group Process, Art Therapy, and Counseling January 26th 6:30-8:30pm

This workshop will increase participants’ knowledge of art therapy and counseling techniques, applications and ethical considerations in a variety of group settings. We will explore group dynamics, roles, goals, interventions, and outcomes used in school and community based art therapy groups. Specific populations that will be addressed include school-based work with exceptional children and immigrant, refugee and newcomers as well as community based art therapy groups for adults living with mental illness and older adults facing Alzheimer's and Dementia. We encourage participants to come with questions, engage in an open dialogue and a willingness to take positive risks through making a little art of their own.

Art Therapy, Counseling and Ethics, February 9th 6:30-8:30pm

This workshop will explore the many ethical considerations art therapists consider when deciding to display client artwork to the public. Art therapy is a unique field which allows the therapeutic process to be shared publicly through artshows and art sales. If done thoughtfully, this can be a very powerful experience for all. Join us as we discuss these ethical questions and explore them through our own art making.

Art Therapy and Soul Collage, February 23rd 6:30-8:30pm

Soul Collage is a fun, creative collage process in which a person creates a personal “deck” of collage cards. In this introductory workshop, we’ll explore the four suits of Soul Collage and also have a chance to create a card (or more!)

Culturally Competent Art Therapy and Counseling; Therapist Self-Reflection, March 9th, 6:30-8:30pm

This workshop provide an opportunity for participant to thoroughly examine one's heritage, values and beliefs, education, age, and sexual orientation to raise the awareness on how these factors are influencing the therapist's approach with clients and in practice. Genogram and self-reported survey will be used. Discussion may also touched on sensitive social and cultural related issues. There will be self-reflective art making time and participants are encouraged to bring material that may be relevant to the art making process, such as photos.

Artful Self-Care Through Positive Psychology,* Saturday, March 11th, 12-2pm

Stacey Hayes MA, LPCA

Take time for self-care as we explore positive psychology through the arts. We will focus on positive psychology concepts such as loving kindness, gratitude, and exploring our strengths. This workshop will rejuvenate you personally and professionally. *Note, this workshop is on a Saturday at ATI to coincide with NCATA’s monthly meeting and will follow the NCATA meeting.
