Art Over Dinner is a series of intimate gatherings with artists and the organizations that support their work. Learn about the three featured artists + Spalding Nix below.

Caroline BULLOCK

Atlanta native, Caroline Bullock creates mixed media abstract works whose primary inspiration is the human relationship with the natural world. Bullock is interested in how we attempt to create our perceived human reality with complex systems of mathematics, science, and technology, but with nature as the backdrop and laboratory. Mathematics is the language of nature, but it also distorts the perception of natural beauty and mystery. Technology allows us to explore the universe, but also encourages us to manipulate nature to our peril. She is intrigued by our innate proclivity to impose rational explanations and limits upon what is natural, irrational and unconscious and to unmask life’s invisible mysteries. Bullock received a BFA in Drawing and Painting from Georgia State University. Her work is included in multiple private and corporate collections worldwide.

Cynthia KNAPP

Atlanta based artist, Cynthia Knapp was born in the Northeast United States and as a child emigrated to Canada. After completing a BA degree with Honors in Fine Arts at York University in Toronto, her career choices led her back to the States, working as a gallerist and setting up a studio. Knapp has continued a professional visual art career based in Atlanta for over 40 years. Knapp’s paintings and works on paper are musings on the interdependent relationship of natural forms. Fields of color blur, overlap, and interact creating an amalgam of natural shapes, not through representation or expression but rather in portraying the essence of abstraction as seen in the physical environment. At times the work references topography, rock formations or repetitious natural patterning. Paint and glaze are layered, added and removed, until the forms develop on the painting surface. Her works on paper and canvas pieces have been collected and commissioned widely throughout the United States and internationally.

Heather LANCASTER

Heather Lancaster is an Atlanta native who hails from a family of artists. Growing up, conversation at home circled around composition, color theory, perspective, and line quality. Rather than photographs, she and her siblings have her mother’s drawings and paintings as primary documentation of their childhood. It seems only natural that such an atmosphere fostered a profound appreciation for art, even as a child. Heather began her own study of art and visual expression as an adolescent and continued it throughout her college years and beyond. Her awareness of and love for the beauty in nature and wildlife is evident in her sensitive, finely rendered drawings of animals and botanical elements.

SPALDING NIX FINE ART

Atlanta native Spalding Nix has a long history in the Atlanta art world - interning at the Heath Gallery, working at Jackson Fine Art, and opening his eponymous gallery in 2003.

At the University of Virginia, Spalding majored in both Art History and Studio Art. After working at Jackson Fine Art, Spalding attended the University of Georgia’s School of Law specializing in Intellectual Property and International Law.

During his undergraduate and law school summers, Spalding worked at The National Gallery of Art on their Design and Development team and in the General Counsel’s Office of The Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. After passing the Georgia Bar, Spalding worked for Sotheby’s in their Client Development group working closely with Sotheby’s Appraisal and Valuations Department.

In the fall of 2003, Spalding opened Spalding Nix Fine Art. The gallery highlights the best in Contemporary Art from abstract artists like Katherine Sandoz and Spencer Sloan to more traditional realists like Richard Thomas Scott and Heather Lancaster. ARTS ATL's Jerry Cullum described the gallery as a "mix of the elegantly conservative and the transgressively adventurous." The gallery takes advantage of multiple platforms from 1stdibs to Artsy to promote its artists.

In addition to dealing art, Spalding is an appraiser valuing personal property, art and antiques, who recently rediscovered a long lost John Singer Sargent watercolor of Venice and a forgotten Norman Rockwell study of Abraham Lincoln. As an Accredited Member of the American Society of Appraisers, Mr. Nix provides valuation services for donation, estate, insurance, and litigation-related purposes.

As an art adviser, Spalding assists individual and corporate clients like the Fortune 500 company Printpack in navigating the Art World by offering confidential and objective advice in the acquisition or sale of fine and decorative art. Spalding has assisted clients in private sales from original Picasso drawings to rare Josef Koudelka photographs.
