Event description

Description

The Madame Walker Theatre Center is proud to present R-Vision exhibition by visual artist, RoShaunda D. Carpenter. Join us for the reception of R-Vision and enjoy the sounds of jazz artist Jefri Payne. Complimentary libations, live music, and thought provoking art will make this an event you won't want to miss!

Art on the Avenue is one of The Walker’s active programs which includes art exhibitions that rotate bimonthly. The Walker, anchoring the historic Indiana Avenue Cultural District, uses art as a platform to empower youth, inspire entrepreneurship and facilitate social justice. In an effort to reclaim the vitality Indiana Avenue held in its heyday, Art on the Avenue provides emerging artists an opportunity to showcase and sell their work in our non-traditional 4th-floor art space as a part of IDADA’s 1st Friday Gallery Walk.

Gallery Hours:
Monday to Friday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
IDADA First Fridays 6 – 9 p.m.

Use the 617 entrance and take the elevator to the 4th floor.

Free parking in the lot just west of the Walker. We’re conveniently located on IndyGo route 5 & 10.

ARTIST BIO

RoShaunda D. Carpenter was born in Flint, Michigan and has spent most of her life in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is a visual and spoken word artist, as well as fashion designer, motivational speaker and author. She dates her love for the arts back to childhood with arts and crafts being her favorite pastime. While RoShaunda has had no formal training in the arts, she has taught many youth and adult art classes-both private and public. Throughout the years her work has been exhibited in local and private showings. In her collection of artwork entitled The Master’s Pieces, you will notice her passion for people from framed pieces to unique jewelry. Her textile work Filthy Rags Made Anew has been seen in many local fashion shows. As well as featured in the Indianapolis Recorder newspaper. It has also afforded her the opportunity to participate in the IBE Midwest Fashion Designers competition in 2005 that featured NBA player Troy Hudson of the Minnesota Timberwolves as one of its models. In 2017 three of her pieces were exhibited in the 29th annual Meet the Artists event as well as television network Fox 59.

ARTIST STATEMENT

RoShaunda’s artwork focuses on people, with an emphasis on freedom and liberation. Many of our stories are often similar. However, the content of our truths may vary. We all desire the freedom to just “be”. Much of that freedom is to express ourselves where we are, as we are. Through my work, I endeavor to lead my audience on a journey of liberty within one’s self.

Unapologetically, RoShaunda allows her pencil, acrylics, charcoal, ink, mixed media and even textile to be the mouthpiece for a world or place that was once silenced. Her hope is that through her art the viewer will speak with her and walk with her on this journey.
