Event description

Description

Steve Mim's "Starving the Beast" documents a philosophical power struggle in public higher education - is college education a public good that should be supported by society, or a cost to be shouldered by students and private corporations?

This film features arguments from both sides, and explores the resulting dramas playing out at the University of Wisconsin, University of Virginia, University of North Carolina, Louisiana State University, University of Texas and Texas A&M.

"Amid all the hand-wringing about student debt, Mims offers a jolt of chilling clarity." - Los Angeles Times

"[Mims'] film goes far ... thanks not just to his thorough research, but also a strong narrative and compelling cinematography." - Village Voice

"Academics used to joke that campus politics were so vicious because the stakes were so small. That's no longer the case, at least where the stakes are concerned, as "Starving the Beast" makes clear." - New York Times

This is part of the Art of Teaching Program's Film Series.

It is Free, and Open to the Public.
