Event description

Description

This Art Life Practice workshop will be co-hosted by the Hammer Museum, known for its artist-centric and progressive array of exhibitions and public programs.

Inspired by Hammer Projects artist Yunhee Min's vibrantly painted installation on the lobby staircase, this workshop will explore Post-Painterly Abstraction, a term that encompasses a variety of painting styles that evolved in reaction to the painterly, gestural approaches the Abstract Expressionism Movement in the mid-twentieth century.

First, learn about the motivations and processes of artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, Morris Louis and Sam Gilliam. These artists revolutionized the ways that paint could transform a canvas, creating new worlds of color and composition.

Following the mini-lecture, we will explore the art form by experimenting with a variety of materials and painting techniques (pouring, spraying, dropping, sponging, smearing, and more). Smocks will be provided but please dress accordingly.

Ticket price includes all art materials as well as wine and snacks.
