Les Petroleuses (Gill Whiteley & Lyn Hodnett)

We are two visual artists operating as the improvising live art duo, Les Petroleuses. Our duo is named after the women communards (derisively dubbed ‘arsonists’) who played a vital role during the 10 weeks that civilians took over Paris in the 1871 Commune. Apart from being a kind of ‘homage’ to les petroleuses and other strong women of classical myths and legends, the idea of being musical ‘arsonists’ – playing with ‘fire’, ripping up and incendiarising conventions – appeals to us. Our multimedia performances (and videos) entail spontaneous sonic and vocalising improvisation with various musical instruments and objects alongside performative drawing on paper and other surfaces. For us, our performances produce a kind of sonic collage which can operate as documentation but also they produce artworks in their own right as the trace and residue of the improvised activity.

At the Art Lab we will give a brief introduction to our independent as well as our joint practice and will do a short improvised multimedia performance, followed by Q & A

Lucid

I am a multidisciplinary artist specialising in digital and traditional mediums. My practice explores themes of identity, emotion and storytelling, with a focus on creating works that engage both visually and conceptually. Through a balance of technical skill and creative vision, I strive to produce art that resonates with collectors, galleries, and diverse audiences.

Art Lab is a peer group for artists and art practitioners to discuss their work, concurrent ideas and critical thinking based in Halifax since January 2019.
