Event description
Featuring a Panel Discussion with Jonathan Kane and Benny Golson

About this Event

In 1958, fledgling photographer Art Kane pitched the idea to Esquire - invite the musicians of New York’s jazz community to come together for one photo. Esquire agreed, and 58 jazz musicians, from the unknown to the world famous, duly assembled at the unlikely hour of 10am at 7 East 126th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues, to take one of the most iconic photos in jazz history. The group included Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Thelonius Monk, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Count Basie, Benny Golson, and more.

In conjunction with the recent release of the book Art Kane: Harlem 1958, published by Wall of Sound Editions, which shares the visual history and story behind the legendary photo, the GRAMMY Museum welcomes musician, photographer, and son of Art Kane, Jonathan Kane, along with legendary jazz musician Benny Golson (who appears in the photo), to discuss the iconic photo and new book about its history. The conversation will be moderated by Scott Goldman.
