Event description

Description

The Red Luna Artists' Collective offers Project Vagina at Bournemouth University. This is an art installation aimed at shedding light on how women navigate their identities through their bodies. Much like Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues, Project Vagina proposes that the vulva, vagina and its layers are an analogy for identity with its outer and inner layers. Our outer layers are defined by our fears and our defenses towards these fears- misogyny, propaganda, the ‘gaze’. Beneath these lie that part of us which is vulnerable, yet knowing, ambiguous and uncertain. Here the true self (in the essentialist sense) explores itself, albeit, nervously, much like the discharge and the softness of the inner layers of the vagina, and looks for safety to emerge.

Underpinned by concepts of the self, the gaze and psycho-somatic responses- we use sculpture, film, art, poetry, audience engaged performance and installation to run our art exhibition as both an aesthetic and experiential artistic experiment.

The exhibition is free and open to all BU staff, PGR, student and the general public. The exhibition is suitable for teaching purposes across a wide range of academic disciplines and academics are encouraged to use the exhibition for these purposes.

The exhibition is not suitable for younger children and some individuals may regard the exhibition as controversial or offensive. The title and the description clearly explain the content and artistic rationale to prospective viewers who are entrusted to engage meaningfully with it.
