Public Launch: Art, Data & Quality of Air
Presented by The Better With Data Society in partnership with Sheffield City Council
Friday 23 January 2015
6pm - 8:30pm (including refreshments)
Showroom Cafe, Sheffield
The Air Quality+ programme is opening up access to the city’s vast amounts of data which could hold the key to addressing the city’s environmental, social and economic challenges.
To help bring that open data to life, we’ve commissioned a number of artists to use the data to create new interactive artworks. These will give us inspiring perspectives on air quality in Sheffield, including contributing factors and impacts such as health, transport and cycling.
At this launch event we’ll be exhibiting the interactive artworks that are driven by air quality data, and hearing from the artists about how they have been inspired to create the pieces.
The artworks include wearable artefacts that bring home the burden of air pollution on our bodies; a bicycle you can ride to generate live music based on air pollution levels; and a breathalyser that will visually compare what comes out of your lungs to the quality of air in the city.
This is one of a series of events to stimulate informed public dialogue about Sheffield’s air quality challenge using open data.
Co-Design Workshops: Over the course of 3 co-design workshops, stakeholders who collect or might use relevant data will collaborate to identify the gaps, weaknesses and potential uses for Air Quality+ data that will help citizens and businesses to create new insights and opportunities that re-define the ambition and story of air pollution in Sheffield. Register for 23 Jan, 13 Feb, 13 Mar.
AQ+ Launch Party - Art, Data & Quality of Air: a free public event to showcase 3 specially commissioned interactive artworks that are inspired by or use open data made available through the Air Quality+ project. Reserve your pass for 23 Jan.
Make & Build for Better Air Quality+: a hands-on event to use Air Quality+ data to create better urban experiences. Design improved civic policies, generate new cultural objects and events, and prototype new apps and products. If you run a community venue across Sheffield, you can also build and take away a visualisation station that will help bring to life the Air Quality+ data for your community. Reserve your place for 14 Mar.
The Air Quality+ project is a collaboration between Better With Data and Sheffield City Council. We are working with civil society partners, artists, businesses and entrepreneurs, universities, researchers and local authority partners across Sheffield and the broader open data community to open up new insight and opportunities through air quality related data.

The Air Quality+ project is funded through the Local Government Association’s Open Data Breakthrough Fund. This supports local authorities to release previously unavailable data and develop the capability to improve access to their local authority data.
