Event description

Description

The Art Attack Project is a grassroots event that gets folks out of the studio and into the streets. By collectively making art in public, you get to meet fellow artists, share your creative process, and celebrate your local arts community. It's free to participate and all artists are welcome. Whether you're painting, drawing, sculpting, or whatever—if you can do your thing outside, we want you there!

At this event, you'll be making art outside on the historic streets of downtown Fredericksburg! For the eighth year in a row, we'll have participants stationed on the sidewalks, transforming the city into one massive outdoor studio space. Register to participate as an artist today, or if you just want to come watch the festivities, follow the Facebook event. Be sure to share that link with your friends so they can see you at work!

Founded by Bill Harris and Gabriel Pons, Art Attack was originally conceived as a way to build solidarity amongst practicing artists. They recognized that whether you're just starting out or a seasoned veteran, it's always better to be connected to a broader community of creative minds. By occupying public space in an inclusive and constructive manner, Art Attack benefits not only the participants, but also the community at large. Participation Guidelines

All artist participants should follow these common sense guidelines.

Check in first
When you arrive at an Art Attack event, check in with the organizers before you start making art. We'll have a table in front of the Ponshop at 712 Caroline Street. You'll get your own Art Attack badge plus other info for the day. Checking in also helps us measure attendance.

Be courteous
Participants may choose their own work stations, but be sure not to impede pedestrian traffic, impose on parking spaces, or disrupt nearby businesses. If you’re setting up in front of a business, introduce yourself and ask permission before you start.

Come prepared
Participants are responsible for all the materials and tools they will need to work (paint, easels, notebooks, etc). You'll be outside, so if you need a chair, table, or umbrella, bring those along. It doesn’t hurt to have some water and a snack, too.

Leave no trace
If you think you might make a mess while working, be sure to set down a drop cloth first. When you’re done, clean up any trash and leave the place looking better than when you found it.

Look sharp
Participants should remember that they are representing the arts community through their interactions with the public during the event, so be friendly and kind to the people you meet. Feel free to create whatever art you would like, just make sure that it is appropriate for general public viewing.

Focus on making, not selling
Art Attack is about making artwork in public and sharing that process to promote yourself and your local creative community. While we encourage participants to hand out business cards and other promotional materials, you shouldn’t treat your work space as a vendor booth. If you do plan on selling any artwork during the event, make sure you comply with all local regulations regarding business and vendor licensing.

FAQ

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
No minimum age or ID required, just bring your art supplies and come hang out for the day.

What should I bring to the event?
Bring any art supplies you will need such as paint, pencils, canvas, paper, easels, notebooks, etc. You also should bring any chairs or tables you will need for the day. It's also smart to bring some water, a snack, and gear to stay safe from the weather.

Do I need to stay the whole time?
No, the start and end times are meant to indicate the length of the event, not how long you have to be sitting making art. If you need to show up late, leave early, or just take a break, that's absolutely OK.

What are my parking options at the event?
There is plenty of free public parking downtown, but a lot of it is limited to two hours. If you plan on leaving your car parked all day, make sure it's somewhere without a time restriction.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No, but be sure to check in with the event organizers before you get started making art.

Is it OK if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?
Sure, no problem, just be sure to check in first. (Did we mention we'd like for you to do that?)

I registered, but now I can't make it to the event. What should I do?
We're sorry we'll be missing you, but no need to do anything on your end. We'll take care of it in the final headcount. Hope to see you next time!
