Event description

Description

Get ready for Art After Dark at The Gantt on August 9th! Our theme is Art as Activism as we commemorate Black August and the 400th of the arrival of enslaved Africans to North America.

Did you know? Black August is a month to commemorate the struggle/resilience of black people. Its origins stem from the August 1971 killing of Black Panther George Jackson in California’s San Quentin prison. August also commemorates the 1619 arrival of slaves in Virginia, the 1791 revolution in Haiti, and the 1925 founding of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters by A. Philip Randolph and others.

Let's celebrate the rich history of the African-American community with an evening of art-making, panel discussions, creative innovation and more.
