Event description

Description

Join CARECEN as we screen "Matangi, Maya, M.I.A.”, a documentary that dives deep beyond the cult of personality of the Hip-Hop superstar known as M.I.A. Witness her rise as a young Tamil woman, activist, refugee, and entertainer whose intellect and identity permeates every artistic act that she is involved in. Her struggles with the systemic racism and sexism of an entertainment industry that commodifies black/brown female bodies for the purpose of media consumption. Never one to take the easy route, M.I.A. uses her voice and platform to shed light on these issues, despite any negative criticism. This film is a moving piece that never reduces Maya to a concept or idea, but shows her in all of her complexity and depth by focusing on an unapologetically powerful artist: M.I.A.

Following the screening there will be a Panel of CARECEN staff, organizers, artists and community activists discussing the parallels of Central Americans and the Tamil community. The significant role of art and activism in shaping a conscious identity and the growing need for solidarity among refugees.

All proceeds from the event will fund CARECEN's efforts to support the Central American migrants at the Southern border.

Pre-sale tickets: $8.00

At the Door: $10.00

Doors open at 5PM, film begins at 6PM followed by panel discussion.
