Description

This Arranging for Small and Large Ensemble course is an 8-week course taught by award-winning pianist-composer, Berklee College of Music graduate and Presidential Scholar Dayramir Gonzalez. This course will provide content that you will integrate into your own compositions and arrangements.

The fee is for 8 sessions. Please select either Tuesday sessions starting on April 30 at 1:00pm or Thursday sessions starting May 2 at 10:30am from "Select Dates" menu. This will schedule you for the full 8-weeks.

Tuesday sessions are 1:00pm-2:30pm (EST) weekly from April 30 - June 25

Thursday session are 10:30am-12:00pm (EST) weekly from May 2 - June 27

About the course:

This curriculum focuses on arranging techniques used by American jazz composers like Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Such techniques include “4-way close,” “Drop 2,” “Drop 2 & 4,” “spread voicings,” “soli,” “lower interval limits,” and “cluster harmony voicings.” These techniques are applicable for brass sections, string quartets, big band, and symphony orchestras.

Practice work based on these topics is assigned and reviewed on a weekly basis. Manuscript paper for note-taking is strongly recommended. A keyboard for your personal reference during lessons is also welcome.

Suggested pre-requisites:

We will be discussing advanced jazz and contemporary topics so a strong knowledge of music theory and harmony is necessary in order to take full advantage of this course.

Format:

Classes are conducted live via the free web application Zoom where questions and feedback are exchanged in real-time. An invitation to join class meeting will be sent 10 minutes before the start of each lesson.
