Description
In electronic music it is, unlike other genres of music, often a challenge to start with a often concise musical idea, elaborate it and develop it into a finished musical production. The workshop helps you handle such a challenge.
The Arranging and Composition Techniques for Electronic Music Workshop will provide you with training on the process from start to finish of an electronic music track or composition. It will provide you with an in depth look in the do's and don'ts for arranging and composing electronic music.

The workshop is organized into four parts:
MORNING
- Focus on building blocks that are widely used in all styles of electronic music. Some building blocks that will be discussed include pads, strings, stabs, etc. How to recognize these building blocks and create your own.
- Learning the different composition techniques (piano, loop, live jam, etc.). Learning about forms of harmony and their uses in different genres. Using the notions for melody and rhythm. Finally, the principles of phrasing during the composition process.
AFTERNOON
- Focus on arranging, how to build a track starting from a core musical idea or pattern. Central principles of energy and contour will be discussed and demonstrated. Understand the arranging techniques including layering, compression, transition effects, etc.
- Final part deals with the method of auditory analysis. An analysis method will be explained with its importance when building your arrangements.

About the teacher:
Dr. Valery Vermeulen is electronic musician, music producer, mathematician, new media artist, author and visiting professor at Erasmus University College in Brussels where he teaches on multimedia art and technology.
He has worked on a research project focusing on the link between music and emotions. Meanwhile he started writing and recording music in his own production studio.
Since 2003 Vermeulen has been working on various interactive multimedia projects where the man machine interaction plays a central role. Besides his artistic and educational activities, Vermeulen currently also works as a statistical expert and consultant and recently finished his studies as music producer at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent.
