The Boy Who Was Raised As A Dog by Bruce Perry, MD, PhD, and Maia Szalavitz

In beautifully written, fascinating accounts of experiences working with emotionally stunted and traumatized children, child psychiatrist Perry educates readers about how early-life stress and violence affects the developing brain. He offers simple yet vivid illustrations of the stress response and the brain's mechanisms with facts and images that crystallize in the mind without being too detailed or confusing. The stories exhibit compassion, understanding and hope as Perry paints detailed, humane pictures of patients who have experienced violence, sexual abuse or neglect, and Perry invites the reader on his own journey to understanding how the developing child's brain works. He learns that to facilitate recovery, the loss of control and powerlessness felt by a child during a traumatic experience must be counteracted. Recovery requires that the patient be "in charge of key aspects of the therapeutic interaction." He emphasizes that the brain of a traumatized child can be remolded with patterned, repetitive experiences in a safe environment. Most importantly, as such trauma involves the shattering of human connections, "lasting, caring connections to others" are irreplaceable in healing; medications and therapy alone cannot do the job. "Relationships are the agents of change and the most powerful therapy is human love," Perry concludes.

Troublemakers - Lessons in Freedom from Young Children at School by Carla Shalaby

Carla Shalaby, a former elementary school teacher, explores the everyday lives of four young “troublemakers,” challenging the ways we identify and understand so-called problem children. Permission to Feel - The Power of Emotional Intelligence to Achieve Well-Being and Success by Marc Brackett, PhD

Social Emotional Learning and the Brain - Strategies to Help Your Students Thrive by Marilee Sprenger

One out of three children in the United States will experience at least one traumatic event by age 16. These experiences frequently elicit a traumatic stress response, which can impact students’ learning, behavior, formation of relationships, and accomplishment of developmental tasks. This book will help you cultivate a trauma-sensitive learning environment for student across all content areas, grade levels, and educational settings. This book study will help you understand what trauma is and how it hinders learning, build strong relationships and create a safe space for students to learn at high levels, adopt a strength-based approach to viewing and responding to student behaviors, and head-off frustration with essential self-care techniques that help you and your students flourish.

You can register for any or all of these book studies! For each book completed, you will earn 20 hours of professional development credit that can be used for professional development hours (CEUs), ADE recertification credit or for DHS licensure credit for speech/language professionals.

Cost: $45 for each online book study. You are responsible for acquiring the book from any vendor. You must register and pay by June 3, 2022. The book study starts on June 6 and it must be completed by September 16, 2022 to receive 20 hours of professional development credit. No partial credit is given. Professional development credit is issued after the book study is complete.

On June 6, you will receive an email with all of the information you need to register on the Edmodo platform and to get started with the book studies.
