Arizona Trail Trek- Hike Montezuma Pass to Sunnyside Canyon

Join Sirena as she continues her 800 mile Arizona Trail Trek from Mexico to Utah on the Arizona National Scenic Trail!
From Montezuma Pass in the Coronado National Memorial, the Arizona Trail begins a highly viewful ascent of the Huachuca mountains. Hikers joining Sirena will enter the Miller Peak wilderness and ascend miles of steep trail before reaching Bathtub Spring 6.4 miles into their day. Hikers can obtain reliable water from Bathtub spring which will likely be the only water source on this day hike. The ridgeline of the Huachuca range at just over 9000 feet offers hikers long views across Arizona and into Mexico. Hikers will enjoy hiking in the presence of tall pines high above the desert below. After several miles of awe inspring views on the crest of the Huachuca mountains the Arizona Trail descends to Sunnyside Canyon trailhead, located just under 6000 feet.
Very Strenuous- 14.7 miles, with 3500 feet of elevation gain. Experienced hikers only!!
Please come prepared with with everything that you will need to dayhike this passage. You must provide your own equipment and food.
- At least two liters of water.
- Snacks for the day.
- Headlamp/ Flashlight
- Comfortable hiking attire.
- Water purification for Bathtub Spring
- A positive attitude.
Directions to Starting Point (Montezuma Pass): From Phoenix or Tucson take I-10 east and exit south on Hwy. 90 to Sierra Vista. After reaching Sierra Vista, go south on Hwy. 92 about 20 miles to S. Coronado Memorial Drive. (From Bisbee, take Hwy 92 west). Follow S. Coronado Memorial Drive 5 miles to the Visitor Center. Montezuma Pass is located 3 miles west of the visitor's center on a winding mountain road.
At the conclusion of the hike, a shuttle will depart from Sunnyside Canyon at that will take hikers back to the starting point at Montezuma Pass.
Directions to Ending Point (Sunnyside Canyon): From Montezuma Pass, Head west on FR 61 about 8.4 miles to FR 48. Turn northwest (right) onto FR 98 and drive 3.1 miles to FR 228. Turn north on FR 228 and drive about 2.5 miles to FR 204. Turn right on FR 204 which ends in 0.9 mile at the trailhead.
