Register now for this full-day seminar. The agenda will be as follows:

8:30 - 9:00 Registration and Breakfast

9:00 - 9:10 Welcome by Robert Schaffer

9:10 - 10:00 What You Need to Know About the Attorney General’s Religious Liberty Guidance presented by Scott Brown

On May 4, 2017, President Trump issued an Executive Order entitled “Promoting Free Speech and Religious Liberty.” In that Executive Order, the President asked the Attorney General to issue guidance “interpreting religious liberty protections in Federal law” so as to “guide all agencies in complying with relevant Federal law.” On October 6, 2017, the Attorney General issued that guidance. The purpose of the guidance is to summarize the existing state of the law. The guidance provides a distillation of principles that the government should adhere to as it goes about its work. This presentation highlights important aspects of the guidance and tells you what you need to know and how it affects you.

10:00 - 10:15 Break

10:15 - 11:00 Public Accommodation Laws and Religious Building Use presented by Eric Kniffin

What effects do public accommodations laws have on religious building use, particularly with respect to wedding ceremonies and bathroom access? This presentation will discuss whether churches and other buildings are places of “public accommodation” and the constitutional protections available to religious organizations who seek to use their facilities consistent with their religious beliefs.

11:00 - 12:00 Special Guest SpeakerBrian Steele, Executive Director of Phoenix Dream Center

The Dream Center Network was founded in 1994 with the first Dream Center in Los Angeles. Since then the Dream Center Network has expanded throughout the world with over 267 Dream Centers worldwide. In 2006, the Phoenix Dream Center was created. They had in their hearts this goal, “To find a need and fill it, to find a hurt and heal it”. The Phoenix Dream Center serves over 40,000 people each month with a range of programs to renovate lives and infiltrate the love of Jesus throughout the inner city.

12:00 - 12:15 Q&A

12:15 - 1:00 Lunch

1:00 - 2:15 Incorporating Faith Requirements into Selection Protocols and Handbooks presented by Joan Rennekamp

Every religious organization has faith requirements for some or all of its positions. However, articulating those faith requirements needs to be more comprehensive than just asking for a Statement of Faith or proof of membership. Joan Rennekamp, our Client Human Resources Consultant, will suggest some best practices for imbuing the selection process with more clear and rigorous inquiry regarding the candidate’s knowledge, experience, and spiritual maturity. She will also address the parts of the employee handbook that should be individualized to each religious organization’s mission and teachings.

2:15 - 3:15 Paid Sick Leave Developments and Federal Employment Law Update presented by Melanie Pate

Since President Trump took office on January 20, 2017, his administration has implemented many changes in the interpretation and enforcement of the federal employment laws that apply to most employers in the United States. The changes affect the potential coverage of Title VII, the enforcement and regulatory priorities of the DOJ, DOL and EEOC, and the leadership of the federal agencies that enforce these laws. This presentation will provide an overview of the changes in federal employment laws that have taken place during the past year.

3:15 - 3:30 Closing Comments and Q&A

This seminar is ideal for clergy of all faiths, other religious institutions, parachurch ministries, nonprofit corporations, and individuals of all faiths.
