Please join the LBJ School of Public Affairs for a special bilingual lecture featuring Argentinian Minister of Defense  Agustín O. Rossi who will discuss the role defense plays in Latin America.

This event is free and open to the public but registration is required. The event will take place at the LBJ School of Public Affairs in Bass Lecture Hall at 12:15 PM on Sept. 17, 2014.

Argentina’s Defense Ministry and candidate for Presidential Primaries, Mr. Agustín Oscar Rossi

Mr. Agustín O. Rossi is the Argentinean Minister of Defense and candidate for Presidential primaries.

He was born in 1959 in the little town of Vera, north of Santa Fe Province, and he moved to Rosario to study civil engineering. Back in the university he joined the Peronist Youth movement and then the Justicialist Party. He was elected local councilor in 1987 and three years latter he became by unanimity the Speaker of the Rosario City Council.

In the years after he continues being active in politics without holding public office. Rossi was re elected to local Councilor in 2002, and served as Speaker from 2004 to 2005.

In the 2005 legislative elections he ran for a seat in the House of Representatives for the Front for Victory, the largest faction of the Justicialist Party, formed by supporters of President Néstor Kirchner. He became the Majority Leader and significantly contributed to adopt bills for the Kirchner government.

Rossi continued in his role as Majority Leader of the House after 2009 elections. President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner nominated him to the post of Minister of Defense of Argentina on May 30, 2013.

La Escuela de Asuntos Públicos LBJ invita a una conferencia con el ministro de Defensa de Argentina, Agustín O. Rossi, sobre el papel de las politicas de defensa en la integración latinoamericana.

Ésta será bilingüe, gratuita y abierta al público, pero la inscripción es obligatoria. La conferencia tendrá lugar en la Escuela de Asuntos Públicos LBJ de la Universidad de Texas en Austin en la sala "Bass Lecture Hall" a las 12:15 pm el próximo 17 de septiembre.

Ing. Agustín O. Rossi es el ministro argentino de Defensa y pre-candidato presidencial.

Nació en 1959 en la pequeña ciudad de Vera, al norte de la provincia de Santa Fe, a sus 17 años se trasladó a Rosario para estudiar ingeniería civil. Ya en la universidad se unió a la Juventud Peronista y luego al Partido Justicialista. Fue elegido concejal en 1987 y tres años después fue electo por unanimidad Presidente del Consejo Municipal.

En los años siguiente siguió militando sin ejercer cargos públicos. Rossi fue re electo edil en 2002, y se desempeñó como presidente del 2004 al 2005.

En las elecciones legislativas de 2005 se postuló como diputado nacional por el Frente para la Victoria, facción mayoritaria del Partido Justicialista, liderada por el presidente Néstor Kirchner. Se convirtió en el Presidente del bloque kirchenerista y contribuyó de manera significativa a adoptar proyectos centrales para el gobierno.

Rossi continuó en su función de Presidente de bloque en la Cámara después de las elecciones del 2009. La presidenta Cristina Fernández de Kirchner lo nombro Ministro de Defensa de Argentina el 30 de mayo de 2013.
