Are Algorithms Neutral? Searching For The Truth
Overview
Title: Are Algorithms Neutral? Searching for The Truth
Speaker: Milo Phillips-Brown, Lecturer in Philosophy of Technology, University of Edinburgh
In this talk, Milo Phillips-Brown draws on his research into the values embedded in technology and the ethics of automated decision-making to address a foundational question: are algorithms neutral?
Topics the session will cover include:
- What we mean by “algorithmic neutrality” and whether it is achievable.
- How algorithms may encode values, biases or assumptions in their design.
- The ethical implications of search engines when automated systems make decisions that affect people’s lives (for example in hiring, lending or criminal justice).
- Strategies for understanding, critiquing and redesigning algorithmic systems so they are more transparent, fair and trustworthy.
By the end of the talk, attendees will gain a sharper understanding of the interplay between technology, values and society, and leave with practical questions to ask when encountering algorithmic systems in their work or everyday life.
