Event description

Description

Earn Rolling Hills Prep Credit for this class!

Rolling Hills Prep is excited to announce a brand new partnership with PV on the Net. For a specific group of classes, current area 8th through 12th graders are able to earn RHP high school credit for successfully completing coursework offered at the Promenade on the Peninsula site. These include the Arduino Microcomputer Basics course offered in December and the Arduino Microcomputer and Applications course in January, and more taking place later in 2017. The RHP credit is also for non-RHP students. Student from other schools and home who are home schooled can add a "transcript" to his/her resume or college apps which indicate completion of the class.

STEM ALERT for PARENTS:

Appropriate for grades 6th -12th

An Arduino is a small computer used to control robots and millions of other devices. If your child is interested in programming or robotics, this is an important introductory class for beginners not available elsewhere and is being taught by an electronics engineer.

It’s never too early to make friends with Arduinos!

Who will benefit from this workshop:

Especially important for anyone pursuing an interest which might lead to a career in electronics, robotics, programming, manufacturing, flight controllers, rockets, sensor packages, control systems.

Any person interested in controlling robots, devices and doesn’t know where to begin.

What are they used for?

Arduinos are the brains in millions of devices including:

  • Cell phones

  • 3D printers

  • Quadcopters

  • RC Cars

  • Robots

  • Laser tag device

  • Navigation systems

  • Security systems

  • Medical devices

There are thousands of fun and educational projects which are used to teach programming Arduinos, such as:

  • Build a Laser tag device (class available in Jan ’17 at PVNet)

  • Hats with blinking LED

  • An alarm for your room (sorry moms)

  • Make a quadcopters

  • Build and RC Car

  • Build a Robot

No knowledge or experience necessary!

Class & Materials fee: $240

IMPORTANT -

MATERIALS - The class fee includes the $90 materials fee for parts which students take home upon completion of the class. These parts can be re-used in the next class starting in January.

2 choices of dates:

  1. December, Saturday 17, Sunday 18, 3hrs , 12:30 – 3:30pm

  2. December, Monday 19. Tuesday 20, Wednesday 21 6:30-8:30pm

The class will cover:

  • Arduino microcontroller basics:

    • Programming an Arduino. Writing your first sketch and how to make your Arduino do your bidding

    • Connecting an Arduino to sensors, lights, speakers, etc. to let your Arduino interact with the world

  • Electricity

    • Explain how electricity works using Ohm’s Law

    • Turning on a light and controlling the flow of electricity

  • Making the Arduino do stuff

    • Making the Arduino play a song out of a speaker

    • Making the Arduino turn on a light and make it change color

    • Connect a button to the Arduino to make it respond to inputs

    • Debugging: Getting the Arduino to tell you what it is doing and why it isn’t doing what you want

Instructor’s Bio

Grant is an Engineer from Harvey Mudd College with an EIT in Electrical Engineering and is receiving his MBA at USC. Grant specializes in microprocessor systems and designs and builds his own Arduino boards and laser tag devices. Grant is dedicated to teaching the next generation about electronics through incredibly fun projects.

Stay tuned for more of Grant’s awesome projects which include a reverse geocache box, a knock detecting door lock, a sunrise alarm clock, a laminar flow fountain with embedded lights, an automated nerf turret and many more!
