Join the Anchorage Avalanche Center for an eight hour avalanche intro-refresh and backcountry safety workshop at Arctic Valley Ski Area. This special workshop will help you learn, or brush up on, the skills and knowledge you need to keep yourself safe and comfortable in avalanche terrain and the winter backcountry environment. We'll cover avalanche basics including recognition, management, and rescue. We'll also address more general issues like proper preparation, gear, and attire for winter backcountry adventures. The learning will be multi-faceted, engaging, and is taught by a Masters-level professional outdoor educator with countless days experience in the mountains of Southcentral Alaska.
This special workshop includes a lift ticket, which we'll use to access higher elevation terrain for our experiential learning. During the midday break between indoor and outdoor sessions, as we break into smaller groups, you'll also have some free time to ride the lifts! To get the most out of this workshop you'll need to be able to move efficiently around the mountain, primarily in downhill mode by ski or snowboard.
There are no prerequisites for this workshop (other than sound mind and reasonable fitness); no prior avalanche training is required. All ages and experience levels are welcome. However, participants under age 18 must either be accompanied (or dropped off) by a parent or legal guardian that can complete paperwork for the minor.
Thanks to the generous volunteers at the Anchorage Avalanche Center and Anchorage Ski Club, this workshop is being offered at a very discounted price. Plus, what you do pay will directly support Anchorage Avalanche Center and Anchorage Ski Club programming for the 2016-17 season!
