Webinar Content
The world watches while the U.S. economy, particularly the auto sector, reels. With an estimated 35% of all U.S. automotive companies at or near balance sheet insolvency, the implications for American suppliers to the industry are immense. For most of the 20th century, the automobile industry was one of the stalwarts of the American economy. Now the sector is quite literally imploding. It would have been inconceivable to contemplate 10 or 20 years ago that the concern over potential bankruptcy would become a realistic possibility in the early 21st century for all of the Big Three. That two Tier 1 companies have already filed for bankruptcy protection in recent years and that more insolvencies in that segment are quite possible in the near term is all the more astonishing.

Surprisingly, in spite of the very well publicized concerns, many suppliers refuse to acknowledge the danger of selling to the OEMs and Tier 1s on open account though sound credit risk mitigation techniques exist for laying off that risk with reputable counterparties. Legacy costs, declining market share in the most important market - North America, too many brands and private equity interests which may or may not be aligned with those of other stakeholders are just a few of the problems which too many vendors hope that the industry's leadership will correct. However, this has not happened to date and many of the fundamental challenges to improved industry health remain ignored.

Everyone who puts their head in the sand during this crisis, whether they are Presidents or Chief Financial Officers on down, does so at the peril of their own companies and livelihood. How U.S. suppliers react to and address their concerns regarding their customers' credit quality will a very significant impact on how the American automobile industry survives and evolves in the 21st century as the world becomes smaller. American executives need to grasp the gravity of this problem and begin developing more sophisticated tools and strategies to address these issues with their customers as partners during this turmoil.
