Event description

Description

Within the Southeastern United States, more than 19,000 archaeological sites will be submerged by the end of the century. Unfortunately, Pockoy Island Shell Ring 1, one of two shell rings located on Pockoy Island, will be gone by 2024. Rapid archaeological investigation is critical, and you can witness the excavation take place!

Multiple guided tours of the site are offered throughout the field season from Monday, May 6 through Friday, May 24, 2019. Please check in for your tour at the archaeology field station upon arrival at the site. Each tour will be approximately 45-minutes. Walk-up tour participants who did not pre-register are welcome, but please check in at the archaeology field station before joining a tour group.

Once you complete the guided tour, you can join the SCDNR archaeology team as an archaeology volunteer and help sift for artifacts. Volunteers of all ages are welcome! More information about signing up in advance to be an archaeology volunteer at Pockoy Island Shell Ring 1 can be found here.

If you arrive between tour times please feel free to observe the archaeologists working, and sign up at the archaeology field station to volunteer on the site.

Participants should dress for the weather and be prepared for the 1.5-mile walk on uneven terrain from the Botany Bay Plantation beach parking lot to the site and back again. Close-toed shoes, a hat, sunscreen, bug spray, water and snacks are strongly recommended.

More information about the May 2018 archaeological excavation at Pockoy Island Shell Ring 1 can be found in the September/October 2018 edition of SC Wildlife magazine.

Check out the SCDNR Heritage Trust website for more information about other SCDNR archaeology opportunities such as Project Archaeology Educator Workshops and internships.
