Aquatic Therapy in Pediatrics

Based on Halliwick Water Specific Therapy (HWST)

Presented by Johan Lambeck, PT, BHS, Co-founder of the Association IATF in Switzerland

This course is appropriate for OTs, COTAs, PTs and PTAs.

Course Overview

Halliwick Water Specific Therapy (HWST) is a philosophy in aquatic therapy based on principles from motor learning. It was created as a sequence to teach those with special needs to swim. The concept focuses mainly on postural control in persons with neuro-musculoskeletal disorders, with the final goals of independence and participation.

This course combines both concepts in order to integrate objectives at all levels of the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) plus self-efficacy and quality of life. The relationship with ICF offers the possibility to combine water-specific problems at the levels of function, activity and participation in a treatment plan. The ICF has also been the reference for a newly developed assessment tool.

In the course, the following elements will be integrated in theory and practice:

  • Assessment and goal setting ( clinical reasoning)
  • Dynamic Systems Model (DNS), evidence-based practice (EBP) and ICF
  • Working individually and in groups
  • Halliwick Ten-Point-Programme and Water Specific Therapy
  • Combination of pool and land theory

Upon completion of this three-day course, attendees will:

  • Understand the framework of evidence-based practice for Halliwick Water Specific Therapy and the legitimation of HWST, based on recent clinical trials and research from neuroscience.
  • Learn the background and theories behind the Halliwick Ten-Point-Programme and Water Specific Therapy.
  • Understand the role of the trunk in balance, gait and posture using elements from constraint-induced movement therapy and neurodevelopmental treatment/Bobath while in the water.
  • Understand that HWST can be used for a variety of purposes including training of cardiovascular endurance and muscle power.
  • Understand the affect HWST can have on arousal of the brain, incorporating elements from sensory integration and Snoezelen (multisensory stimulation).
