Speakers
Martina Micheletti
Martina is a Professor of Bioprocess Fluid Dynamics in the department, where she leads research in understanding the impact of the engineering environment on the manufacture of cell/gene therapy products, antibodies and vaccines. Since 2018 she has been co-Director of the UCL-Oxford VaxHub aimed at developing lost-cost vaccines, and she is now co-Director of two big research networks in vaccine manufacturing, VaxHub Sustainable (vaccines for pandemic preparedness) and VaxHub Global (Vaccines for LMICs). Martina is currently Deputy HoD (Research) and contributes to the Faculty Research Directors Forum.
Thomas Johnson
Thomas joined UCL Biochemical Engineering in 2010 as an undergraduate. He started his doctorate in 2014 with Prof Daniel Bracewell and Pall (now Cytiva). After continuing as a postdoc in 2018 he was awarded an MRC Fellowship in 2021 to collaborate with Cytiva and leading UK&US universities. Thomas recently started as a lecturer in January 2025. His research focuses on applying high-resolution imaging techniques to understand bioprocessing structures to inform future designs.
Thomas McDonnell
Associate Professor of Biomarker Discovery, Versus Arthritis Senior Research Fellow, UCL
Emily Kostas
Emily is a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and Lecturer in Sustainable Biorefining and Bioprocessing. She was previously a BBSRC Discovery Fellow (2019-2022), and between 2022 - early 2024 she was also the Centre of Doctoral Training (CDT) Manager and Postgraduate Programmes Manager in the Department of Biochemical Engineering. Her research explores the compatibility of different thermochemical conversion technologies and biochemical processing pathways to convert seaweeds into bioproducts of value, biofuels and biomaterials, and how they can be embedded within a sustainable cascading biorefinery. Her current work (supported through a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship) aims to now address the key challenges that are preventing the research and commercialisation progression of seaweed biorefineries and seaweed bioproducts manufacture in the UK.
