Event description

Description

The Living Building Challenge (LBC) is designed to encourage the development of buildings that have a net positive benefit to their environment. To date, most certified Living buildings are low rise buildings outside of high density urban areas.

This presentation will suggest how we can achieve the aims of the LBC in New York City while maintaining high density and intensity of use. Enlarging the boundaries of consideration and applying biomimicry could help cities to function like vibrant diverse and resilient ecosystems. By designing buildings to play an integral part in the systems they are within, the concept of positive benefit can be expanded. Lessons from nature can help design buildings and systems which are in tune with the local environment.

Presenter:

Clare Miflin is an architect with over 20 years of experience, most recently at Kiss + Cathcart, Architects. She is a Certified Passive House Designer, Co-author of the AIANY Zero Waste Design Guidelines, a Certified Biomimicry Professional and member of NYC Living Building Collaborative. Clare is the founder of Woven – a consultancy focusing on weaving together buildings and vegetation, humans and nature, and metrics and vision.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Articulate the concept of biomimicry and describe how it could be applied to the built environment

  2. Describe the difficulties of applying Living Building Challenge to dense urban environment, especially with respect to the relationship of occupancy density and floor area ratio to available resources.

  3. Explain the concept of ‘scale jumping’ and how this relates to urban density and the boundary of consideration.

  4. Discuss the net positive benefit of buildings in terms of how they affect the socio-cultural and environmental systems of which they are part.
