APLD Bay Area District Speaker Series:

Small Space Garden Design & Plant Selection
with Susan Morrison & Janet Sluis

APLD member, designer, and author Susan Morrison will share dozens of tips for getting the most out of a limited space and curator of the Sunset Western Garden Collection Janet Sluis will share some great small space plants.

Susan Morrison’s presentation is based on her new book, “The Less is More Garden: Big Ideas For Designing Your Small Yard.” She’ll share her process for working with clients to ensure an effective design program, strategies to make a small garden feel larger and the importance of incorporating views and focal points.

For the second half of the meeting, Susan has collaborated with Janet Sluis from the Sunset Western Garden Collection and Devil Mountain Wholesale Nursery to present some of their favorite trees, shrubs and perennials for smaller gardens.

At the end of the presentation, Susan will have copies of her book available for purchase and Devil Mountain will raffle off several plants.

This program = 1.5 APLD CEUs

About Our Speakers:

Susan Morrison is a nationally recognized landscape designer and authority on small-space garden design. She has shared her strategies on the PBS series Growing a Greener World and in publications such as Fine Gardening. Morrison has also served as editor-in-chief of The Designer, a digital magazine produced by the Association of Professional Landscape Designers.

Janet Sluis is the curator of the Sunset Western Garden Collection and West Coast Program Director for Encore Azalea. Born into the sixth generation of a Dutch seed family, plants are in her DNA; at the age of six she was hybridizing ranunculus and growing kale in her garden. After studying Marketing, Horticulture, and Agricultural Business, she spent twenty years in production and product development for wholesale plant nurseries in California. When she is not traveling in search of new plants, you can find her battling slugs in her Berkeley test garden.
