Event Details

Join the AMC’s Boston Chapter as they present a unique slideshow & video hosted by Apa Sherpa himself – the only man in history to have reached the summit of Mount Everest a record 21 times, and one of the greatest mountaineers who has ever lived.

Born in the village of Thame in Nepal, Apa first began working as an expedition porter at age 12 following the untimely death of his father. But it wasn’t until age 30, in 1990, that he reached the summit for the first time. For the next 20 plus years, Apa embarked on an almost unbroken string of annual ascents up Everest. In 2000, with his 11th trip to the top, he broke the record for the most Everest summits, and thereafter established a new record with each successive climb. Apa has also taken part in the Eco Everest Expeditions, which in addition to a summit climb, focus on publicizing ecological and climate-change issues affecting Everest, while also employing ecologically friendly practices, such as the use of solar cookers and removing camping and climbing gear left behind by earlier expeditions.

In 2010, Apa established the Apa Sherpa Foundation to further educational and economic opportunities in his native Thame and elsewhere in the region. After a record 21 ascents of Everest, he announced his retirement in 2011 and currently resides in Utah with his wife and 3 children.

This February 8th, come meet Apa and watch a short video of his personal growth from a young porter into a world-class mountaineer, followed by a slideshow depicting a mountaineer’s journey from Kathmandu to the lofty heights of Mount Everest. A short Q&A session with Apa to follow. This event is sponsored by the Boston Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club.
