Event description

Description

In the 1930s, Broadway audiences were fortunate to see new musicals virtually every season by legendary composers including Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, the Gershwins, and Jerome Kern, as well as rising stars like Vernon Duke, Hoagy Carmichael, Kurt Weill, and Harold Arlen. Standards like “My Funny Valentine,” “It’s De-Lovely,” “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” and “The Lady is a Tramp,” among others, were introduced in these productions.

On September 21st, for one night only, we will bring together story and song to take you onstage and backstage during this remarkable period in American musical history! Celebrated author, archivist, and curator David Leopold will share fascinating history (and gossip) from 1930s Broadway musicals, and noted cabaret chanteuse Karen Gross will bring a selection of classics from these shows to life in the intimate setting of the Studio of Ben Solowey. The performance will be held in the Studio’s charming gallery space, amidst the hit exhibition FACE THE MUSIC: Ben Solowey’s Portraits of Broadway Musicals—which features Solowey’s dazzling illustrations of Ann Miller, Jimmy Durante, Eve Arden, Fanny Brice, and other Broadway performers of the day.

Doors open at 7 pm; the performance starts promptly at 8 pm. Join us for a pre-show reception that will give you time to come face to face with these remarkable portraits and take in the beautiful Solowey Studio and the lush surroundings of the 34-acre Bucks County farm.

Karen previously “bewitched, bothered, and bewildered” audiences at The Studio of Ben Solowey with her 1920s cabaret “Let’s Misbehave.” For this show, Karen will be accompanied by “boy wonder” of the keyboards, rising star Brett Miller. Show direction is by Kristine Zbornik.

Tickets are $25. As this is the smallest room that Karen plays, and which she has repeatedly sold out, orders will be filled on a first come-first serve basis. Don’t miss this sure-to-be special event!
