About this Event

Anxiety and Depression in Students with ASD in the General Education Classroom

This training will describe the symptoms of anxiety and depression commonly exhibited by children and adolescents with ASD. Basic strategies for supporting secondary students in the classroom will be provided.

Training Objectives:

  1. Identify the common symptoms of anxiety and depression in secondary students with ASD;
  2. Identify basic strategies that can be used to support students with ASD who experience anxiety and depression.

About the Presenter

Cheryl Checkers is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in private practice. Prior to private practice, she worked as a Clinical Support Specialist for Florida Atlantic University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (FAU CARD) and as Clinical Director for the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Palm Beach County (NAMI) where she currently serves on the Board of Directors. Cheryl has 15 years of experience treating children, teens and adults dually diagnosed with ASD and a mental health disorder. She specializes in the areas of autism spectrum disorder, severe and persistent mental illness, dual diagnosis, parent education and professional consultation.
