The Leica Gallery LA is honored to announce the upcoming exhibition by photographer Anthony Friedkin: “The Gay Essay”, a devoted series of photographs made between 1969 and 1973. At the outset of the photographer’s long and productive career, “The Gay Essay” is a kaleidoscopic, personal response to gay life in Los Angeles and San Francisco at the dawn of the Gay Liberation movement. More than four decades later, it stands as both a profound record of historic change in our culture and an eloquent testament to Friedkin’s passion for the art of photography. The photographs are included in the permanent collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum and the de Young museum in San Francisco among others.

Only nineteen at the time, Friedkin accomplished a revealing set of photographs that detail the intimacy and love shared by gay couples, as well as portraits of gay political and religious activists, male prostitutes, lesbians, drag queens and trans individuals. He photographed the first Gay Pride Parade held in Hollywood, California.

The exhibition opens June 3rd, and runs through August 1st, 2022.

Sean Black Character

Leica Gallery Los Angeles presents Sean Black’s “Character”, a series of images exploring the features that identify human beings, which often collectively are referred to as character. These qualities are both visible upon first glance or become distinguishable after the unfolding of time in the discovery of the content of one’s character.

The images in this exhibition showcase character through properties of love, humanity, accomplishment, and diversity. Self-portraits from Black‘s ongoing series Secretly Pretty, a better-late-than-never celebration of gender expression of trans feminine identity, are displayed alongside portraits of groundbreaking icons, many we know through the characters they portray in TV and film.

The exhibition features some of the most prolific activists and humanitarians in the contemporary LGBTQ+ liberation movement, including Leslie Jordan, Angelica Ross, MJ Rodriguez, Amy Schneider, Shakina Nayfack, Trace Lysette, AB Farrelly and many more.

June 4th - Join Sean Black for a one-day workshop with the Leica Akademie. Learn More:
