Event description

Description

Traditional medicine is the primary source of health care to over 60% of the Ugandan population. Traditional Medicine use in Uganda is steadily increasing because of globalization, improving public confidence and inequity in access to conventional medicine. In 2012 the Ministry of Health (MOH) developed a policy framework for Traditional and complementary Medicine (TCM) and the policy among others aims at integrating traditional medicine (TM) in the National health care system. In order to stimulate local industry, create jobs among others, the Government of Uganda has recently adopted the policy of Buy Uganda, Build Uganda. By implication this policy would prioritize indigenous medicine for primary health care. However, because of many years of inadequate investment in Research and development of traditional medicine, there is paucity of evidence on safety, efficacy and quality of traditional medicines used by the communities for management of common illnesses. Consequently, the essential medicines list for primary health care does not include any indigenous medicine. This comes against a backdrop of persisting shortages in the availability and access to essential medicines in the National Health care system. The 2018 conference is therefore aimed to discuss challenges and mechanisms to harness the potential of traditional medicines to enhance availability of essential medicines hence the proposed theme “Integrating traditional medicines into the National essential medicines package: Opportunities and challenges”
