About this event

This gathering will be a special opportunity to come together as a community and enter more deeply into the holy season of Lent.

We are blessed to gather at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary, in Weston, MA where we are once again hosted and welcomed by Fr. Brian Kiely, Malta Chaplain and Rector of the Seminary.

Our Lenten gathering will include a late afternoon reflection, Mass in the Chapel, and a reception with hors d'oeuvres and refreshments. The reflection will be offered by Malta Chaplain and Interim Rector of St. Paul Cathedral in the Diocese of Worcester, Msgr. James P. Moroney. Monsignor Moroney's talk will follow the history of the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ in Western Liturgical Art and its foundational meaning in the history of the Order of Malta. The origins of the eight pointed Maltese cross will be explored, along with various interpretations for its meaning. Through the Cross we will explore how to more deeply enter Lent.

The Order of Malta is a lay religious order of the Roman Catholic Church with over 13,000 members and relief operations worldwide. Today, as at its founding over 900 years ago, the Order is foremost a Hospitaller Order, with members personally providing hands-on care and assistance to the sick and the poor. The Order traces its origins to the creation of a hospital in Jerusalem in the 1070s to care for pilgrims to the Holy Land, predating the Crusades.

The Order assumed its military role in the twelfth century as its members, who were also knights, provided armed protection for pilgrims and the defense of the new Christian Kingdom against Muslim attacks. Today, the mission of the Order is to give glory to God by promoting the spiritual well-being of its members and providing care and assistance to the sick and the poor. Members of the Order are also charged with the responsibility of defending the Faith.

The Boston Area includes Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and Rhode Island. We are a vibrant, spiritual community committed to serving others and growing ever closer to Christ.  You are invited to learn more about our work and how you might join us!

Each spring, a reception is held for prospective new members considering membership in the Order. Members are encouraged to propose individuals to be invited.
