"Leading from the Second Chair"

Join us on January 19th, 2021 at 10:00 AM (CST) to hear and learn from diversity, equity, and inclusion advocates and experts discuss what local governments are doing to develop DE&I programs for their organizations. Get tips on community partnerships, toolkits, and how you can be prepared when your City Manager asks you to "look into this and get back to me!"

Seminar Panelist

Alan Vanderberg

County Administrator, Ottawa County, Michigan

Mr. Vanderberg has served as County Administrator of Ottawa County, MI since December 2003. Prior to Ottawa, Al previously served as DCA of Kent County, MI, CM of South Haven, MI. Al earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan and Master of Public Administration Degree from Michigan State University.

Featured in the October 2020 issue of PM Magazine, Mr. Vanderberg will provide an overview of the County's experience while developing their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Department.

Additionally, Al served as President of the Michigan Municipal Executives, Michigan Association of County Administrative Officials (MACAO), Chair of the Grand Valley Metropolitan Council (GVMC) Board of Directors, and Chair of the former West Michigan Strategic Alliance. He was appointed by Gov. Snyder to the Michigan Municipal Services Authority Board of Directors and Executive Committee and was appointed by Gov. Snyder and reappointed by Gov. Whitmer to the Michigan Lead Contamination in Children Elimination Commission.

Al is a member of the MI Department of Civil Rights Council for Government and Education on Equity and Inclusion. Al also serves as Government Coordinator for the MI American Legion Girls State Program and became an Affiliate of the MSU Extension Center for Local Government Finance and Policy in 2016.

Al is a member of the adjunct faculty of Grand Valley State University where he teaches in the undergraduate and masters programs. He also writes and speaks frequently on local government management topics and issues.

Allison Matson

Assistant Village Manager, Village of Flossmoor, Illinois

Allison Matson has been the Assistant Village Manager for the Village of Flossmoor since 2016. In her position, she oversees internal services of IT, safety, human resources, community relations, and communications. Prior to Flossmoor, she worked for the Village of Downers Grove and the City of Naperville. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois and Northern Illinois University.

Dele Lowman-Smith

Senior Vice-President, GovHR USA

Dele Lowman Smith is a past local government executive and professional facilitator, consultant, trainer, and coach who uses her 20+ years of experience to lead individuals, teams, and organizations to higher levels of performance. Her public sector management experience spans nonprofit, state, and local government where she has overseen strategic planning, human resources, communications, information technology, finance, legislative affairs, and various other functional areas. She cut her teeth in organizational improvement at the Florida Sterling Council, a public-private partnership with the Executive Office of the Governor. This experience connected Ms. Lowman Smith with some of the most innovative and lauded companies and organizations in Florida and informed her local government service.

Heidi Voorhees

President, GovHR USA

Ms. Voorhees has more than 35 years’ experience in executive recruitment, general management consulting, and local government administration. She is the co-owner and President of GovHRUSA, a management consulting, executive recruitment, and GovTempsUSA, a temporary staffing business. GovHRUSA has conducted more than 700 recruitments in 41 different states since its inception in 2009.
