Come join our “get off the couch” 10-week program for beginning runners

December 2, 2018 - February 9, 2019

Whether you are new to running or trying to return to running, this is a program for you. This class is intended for adults and families with children (age 10 and up) who are looking to “get off the couch-with no running experience at all” and do a 5K (3.1 miles) distance in a 10 weeks.

Participants should be capable of walking briskly for 20 minutes and should check with their health care professional prior to starting any fitness program.

When, Where, Parking (see map below)

Every Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm and Sunday at 8am, beginning Sunday, December 2, 2018.

Sundays 8 AM - Weems-Whelan Field/Bates Middle School (¼ mile oval) Track (off of 935 Spa Rd by the City of Annapolis Public Works Garage stop light), Tuesdays 6 PM - Annapolis High School track (left of school building). Thursdays 6 PM - meet at Anne Arundel Community College Center for Applied Learning and Technology (CALT) lower lobby and running in parking lot below YMCA.

Membership and Registration

Step 1 - Annapolis Striders Membership. YOU MUST BE A MEMBER OF THE ANNAPOLIS STRIDERS ($25.00/year) TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS CLASS.

Step 2 - Class registration - click on the GREEN "REGISTER" icon on top right of this page.

A separate registration is needed for each person. Parents must sign up those under age 18. If you are already a Striders member, then class is free but you need to register for the class. No paper registrations accepted!

Program

This is a 10 week run/walk schedule. The first week is 1 minute run and 2 minute walk, 7 times. Gradual increases of about 1 minute additional running over each week to 20 minutes of continuous running by the 10th week. Each session includes warmups, run/walk, cool down and then stretching. Session speakers include: Running shoes and running attire. Proper running form. Hydration, Nutrition. Injury prevention and treatment. Running safety.

Program Goal

Our primary goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle through safe and fun running. The program goal is that for all who finish the program to complete the Striders Valentines Day 5K (3.1 miles) which will be held on the second weekend of February 2019 at Kinder Farm Park. Participants who attend at least 10 sessions are eligible to receive a class technical shirt. Registration and fees for this race are separate and not included in this program.
