Event description

Description

Hear about how the Black Lives Matter-inspired novel The Hate U Give -- an instant bestseller -- speaks to the heart of race, activism and social change in America today from the author herself, Angie Thomas.

Discover how to find your activism and turn the political into the personal, inspiring action and speaking truth to power. Delve into why young black people need to see themselves in fiction and why the world needs more compelling depictions of black girls in art. And get inspired as Thomas delivers a compelling argument for empathy, how it is a more powerful tool than sympathy, and how -- when done right -- fiction can help us find our voice, or lend it to others.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Angie Thomas was born, raised, and still resides in Jackson, Mississippi. She is a former teen rapper whose greatest accomplishment was an article about her in Right-On Magazine. She holds a BFA in Creative Writing from Belhaven University. Her debut Young Adult novel, The Hate U Give, was published on February 28, 2017.

ABOUT THE BOOK

An instant bestseller, this captivating story has been called “a stunning, brilliant, gut-wrenching novel that will be remembered as a classic of our time” by The New York Times and is currently being adapted for film.

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter navigates between the poverty-stricken neighborhood she has grown up in and the upper-crust suburban prep school she attends. Her life is up-ended when she is the sole witness to a police officer shooting her best friend, Khalil, who turns out to have been unarmed during the confrontation -- but may or may not have been a drug dealer. As Starr finds herself even more torn between the two vastly different worlds she inhabits, she also has to contend with speaking her truth and, in the process, trying to stay alive herself.
